Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Understanding Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is when your airway has occluded and you have stopped breathing for at least 10 seconds. Patients who have frequent episodes like this while sleeping can not only make you sleepy during the day, but can cause damage to your heart and other organs. SleepQuest can diagnose sleep apnea with a portable monitor that you can use in the comfort of your own home.

Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA for short, is when the airway has occluded to the point where you stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer, and as you can imagine, if you stop breathing 60 times in an hour, that means you stop breathing for at least 10 seconds every minute, and it's doing tremendous damage to your heart and to the rest of the organs in your body. It's a function of two things. One is the tissue in the airway that can collapse, that can cut off the airway, and the other is the size of the airway. All patients who snore should be ruled out for sleep apnea, meaning that they should be diagnosed to see either if they have sleep apnea, or they don't have sleep apnea. How we diagnose OSA is with the portable monitor that we use in the home. It's actually recording whether or not you stop breathing at night, and quantifying the number of episodes. It's extremely accurate, and it's done in the comfort of your own bed.
