Quick Tip: I Can’t Breathe with my Nasal Mask

The Problem

You don’t feel like your nasal mask is working and feel as if you’re suffocating.

The Solution

Do you feel the pressure is insufficient?  If the answer is yes- you should talk to your doctor about a pressure change.

Can you breathe clearly through your nose? If you answered no we would recommend trying a full face mask.

The feeling of suffocation is due to the nasal or pillow mask; positive air is being forced into a blocked area usually causing you to mouth breath to obtain relief from the feeling of suffocation.  This defeats the purpose of positive airway pressure with this type of mask because air enters through your nose and instead of travelling and opening up your airway from obstruction; the air exits out the mouth. A full face mask gives you the ability to breathe through your nose and mouth, allowing the positive air pressure to keep the airway open.   This inability to properly breathe through one’s nose is often due to congestion, nasal allergies or a deviated septum.
