Diagnosing and Treating

Sleep Apnea Diagnosis and Treatment

An overnight diagnostic sleep study is used to definitively diagnose sleep apnea. A sleep study is also necessary in order to provide documentation to a health insurance company of a medical condition that requires treatment. This study is painless, non-invasive, and measures a number of physiological changes while you sleep. A medical device records the number of sleep disordered breathing events that occur during the night. The total number of events, known as "apneas" and/or "hypopneas", determines the severity of the apnea.

Treatment Options

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is the most common and effective method of sleep apnea treatment since its introduction 30 years ago. The CPAP device has multiple components. A mask fits over the patient’s mouth and nose and delivers a steady, carefully controlled stream of air. The gentle pressure of the air keeps the patient’s throat from closing off and allows the patient to enter into the deeper, more restful stages of sleep. Other forms of sleep apnea treatment may include the use of oral appliances and surgery.
