Highest Honor to Dr. Dement

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF), as part of the observation of National Sleep Awareness Week, will be honoring Dr. William C. Dement with the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award. Scheduled for presentation at the kick-off Gala March 26th, in Washington DC. http://www.nsaw.org/2001preview.html. This award recognizes Dr. Dement's extensive and unique role in expanding the field of sleep medicine as well as his inexhaustible work to forward public and professional education on the subject of healthy sleep.

No better recipient could have been chosen, as Dr. Dement may be the only person who has devoted his entire scientific and professional career to sleep. Frequently described as the "Father of Sleep Medicine," Dr. Dement began his involvement in sleep science as a student at the University of Chicago in the early 1950s. Over the ensuing years he has been credited with the discovery of REM sleep, the establishment of the country's first sleep disorders clinic, the founding of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the initial launching of the NSF.

As chairman of the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, Dr. Dement has been a driving force in the campaign to elevate the health problems associated with sleep disorders to a level of national concern. Dr. Dement is often given credit for nearly single-handedly defining and developing the field of Sleep Medicine. His testimony has helped shape public policy regarding impaired driving and piloting caused by poorly managed sleep. He has also inspired changes in shiftwork and school hour policies to increase productivity, and created channels for the funding of ongoing research in the field. He continues to educate medical students and practicing physicians through his classes at Stanford University and has just completed a new textbook, "The Stanford Sleep Book for College Students," for his popular undergraduate course, Sleep and Dreams.

Serving as Chief Scientific Advisor to SleepQuest, he further augments the awareness of the general public regarding sleep disorders through his periodic columns and question & answer board.

SleepQuest would like to express our congratulations and pride on the occasion of this well-deserved award and our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Dement for his generous contributions. On examination of the broad scope of his career, it appears possible that were it not for Dr. Dement, the entire field of Sleep Medicine and the industry that surrounds it would have remained little more than a fleeting dream.
