Question of the Week - March 5, 2002

Are sleep disorders and heart conditions related?

Julie

Answer to the Question of the Week

Julie,

It has been shown that certain sleep disorders can increase the risk of heart conditions. In particular, it is estimated that up to 50% of those who have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) also suffer from high blood pressure. It is strongly believed that OSA also increases the risk for stroke and cardiac abnormalities.
