Question of the Week - January 25, 2002

"Please help! My husband, Terry, can fall asleep any time of the day. He snores excessively and is unable to wake up on his own. It takes 20 minutes to get him up in the morning. What can be done for him?"

Answer to the Question of the Week

Your husband has symptoms that are extremely suggestive of the sleep related breathing disorder called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. You identified two key signs of this disorder, which are snoring and excessive sleepiness. I urge you to have him see a physician specifically for these complaints. His physician should make arrangements for a diagnostic sleep test as soon as possible. Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be very threatening to a person's health, safety, and quality of life!
