Question of the Week - October 1, 2001

"My husband says that I jump or startle during the night; not just when I am falling asleep. What would cause this?"

Answer to the Question of the Week

It is very possible you are experiencing a sleep disorder called Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD). In this disorder, bodily movements occur during sleep with a clocklike regularity. These movements always involve the legs and sometimes the arms, although victims of PLMD usually are not aware of their nighttime kicking. The movements often result in partial or full awakenings that may result in insomnia and unrefreshing sleep. In addition, bedpartners also may suffer from disturbed sleep due to their partners bedtime activity. This disorder is closely associated with a waking disorder called Restless Legs Syndrome. A sleep test is the only means of reliably detecting PLMD; therefore, I encourage you to seek help at a sleep disorders center.
