Question of the Week - July 29, 2002

All the available information clearly shows that sleep deprivation can result in poor productivity and can even be dangerous. I try to get adequate sleep, but this is not always possible. What is the best "quick fix" way to combat daytime sleepiness?

Roy,

If you are able to take a break from your activities and take a short daytime nap, this is by far the most effective short-term tool for coping with daytime sleepiness. Studies have shown that a nap (even a short 15 minute nap) followed by a caffeinated beverage is the best quick way to combat an episode of daytime sleepiness.

However, this method is really only a band-aid. The only lasting and effective method of addressing daytime sleepiness is to get enough nighttime sleep. Each hour of missed sleep accumulates as sleep debt. If, for example, you have deprived yourself of 2 hours of sleep, this, like credit card debt, must be paid in full. A 15 minute nap does not erase this debt, it is only a "partial payment." The remaining balance must be paid off at some point in order to achieve optimal daytime alertness.
