Question of the Week - April 22, 2002

Is it normal for someone to sleep 5-6 hours a night on a regular basis and claim to feel fine and not need more sleep?

Michael

Answer to the Question of the Week

Michael,

While it is certainly not typical for someone to sleep only 5 hours of sleep and feel consistently rested, it is not necessarily abnormal. We tend to be wired differently, and each of us has unique sleep length needs. The average person needs a little over eight hours of sleep a night; while there are fortunate people who can feel well rested on less than 5 hours of nightly sleep.
