Question of the Week - August 14, 2000

"I am a high school science teacher. My students are continually getting only a few hours of sleep each night. Can you point me in the direction to find some good statistics and research on the problems this causes both physically and psychologically? I would like to make a big issue of this with the students and parents next school year."

Thank you, Jo Ann

Answer to the Question of the Week

I am very pleased that you intend to educate your students about sleep. There is an extensive scientific literature on sleep deprivation and sleep disorders in adolescents, including high school students. The essentials are clearly set forth in a recent report and research guide published by the National Sleep Foundation titled "Adolescent Sleep Needs and Patterns." You may secure a copy of this document by contacting the National Sleep Foundation (202/347-3471). In addition, the NSF website should be consulted at www.sleepfoundation.org. Another report on this subject will be released very soon by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. It is titled "Sleep Needs, Patterns, and Difficulties of Adolescents" and summarizes a workshop involving outstanding experts in the field on the topic of sleep and adolescence.
